Beyond Knowledge: Finding Your True Value in the Age of AI
I want you to sit with a question for a moment. It’s a question that should stop every entrepreneur, coach, and leader in their tracks.
If knowledge is becoming free… what is your real value?
This uncomfortable but necessary truth was the central theme of a recent talk by Mike Scott (MAICD) at an EO Cape Town event. In a world where anyone can access vast amounts of information via AI, the game has fundamentally changed. Relying on “what you know” as your primary competitive edge is like building a house on shifting sand.
Mike laid out a clear, no-nonsense path for navigating this new reality, and it’s a wake-up call we all need to hear.
Step 1: Get Your House in Order – The Data Mandate
Before you can even think about leveraging AI effectively, you have to look inward. Mike’s first point was simple: clean up your data.
Think of it this way: AI is a powerful engine, but it runs on the fuel you give it. If you feed it messy, disorganized, or low-quality information, you will get messy, disorganized, and low-quality results. It’s that classic “quality of inputs determines quality of outputs” vibe.
This means taking a hard look at your CRM, your client files, your internal documents, and your financial records. Is your data clean, organized, and accessible? If not, your journey with AI will be frustrating and ineffective.
Step 2: Rethink Your Workflow – Human-First vs. AI-First
It’s tempting to jump on the “AI bullet train” and try to automate everything. But this is a rookie mistake. The real strategic work lies in asking a more nuanced question: what should be human-first vs. AI-first?
Some processes are ripe for AI: drafting initial emails, summarizing long reports, or analyzing data sets. Letting AI handle these tasks can free up enormous amounts of your time and mental energy.
But other processes desperately need a human-first approach. Think of critical client conversations, strategic decision-making, or providing empathetic feedback to a team member. These moments require intuition, emotional intelligence, and a depth of understanding that AI cannot replicate. The goal isn’t to automate everything; it’s to thoughtfully augment your humanity.
Step 3: Answer the Big Question – If Not Knowledge, Then What?
This was Mike’s final and most powerful point. If access to knowledge is no longer the great differentiator, then why do your clients actually choose you?
This is the wake-up call. For consultants, coaches, and experts of all kinds, our value is no longer stored in the information we hold in our heads. That information is now a commodity.
So, what’s left? What is the core, unshakable value you provide that no machine can ever replace?
The Truth Serum Takeaway: Your Differentiator is Your Lens
For me, the answer to that big question comes back to one simple truth: clients don’t just buy what you know; they buy how you see.
AI can give them the “what”—the data, the facts, the information. But it cannot replicate your unique lens. Your lens has been crafted by years of lived experience, your personal triumphs and failures, your unique personality, and the hard-won wisdom that comes from applying knowledge in the real world.
Clients choose you for your perspective. They choose you for the way you connect disparate ideas, for the clarity you bring to their chaos, and for the way you apply what you know to their specific, human context.
That is your true differentiator. AI can’t replicate your journey. It can’t replicate your intuition. And it certainly can’t replicate your unique ability to make someone feel seen, heard, and understood.
So, I’ll ask you directly:
What’s your real differentiator?
